Bear videoed at Russell Shelter on the Appalachian Trail July 2013 in the Great Smokey Mountain National ParkThis bear at its closest was only 11 steps away. About 20 minutes later, there was one that came within 4 steps. These bears are almost fearless of humans. Its best to scare them off so they don't become comfortable around people, especially at or near the shelters. These bear have become accustomed to the human food scraps improperly disposed of at these backcountry shelters. The more a bear looses his fear of humans, the closer the bear comes to being needlessly destroyed. Please do not feed the bears!!!

I don't know if they know where they are?A conference of the minds on Old Rocky Top. We may be here a while...LOL!

Looking Glass Falls, Pisgah National Forest, North CarolinaOn the 13th day of our backpacking trip, we hiked to this beautiful venue. Due to the heavy rains in recent weeks, the water flow was tripled. However, the scouts didn't seem to mind.

Rocky Top, GSMNPWe made it to the top of Rocky Top at about 9am. The weather wasn't cooperating with us so we waited about an hour for the clouds to break. This is a brief, but wonderful view from the summit. However, the clouds rolled back in on us and we departed north to climb Thunderhead. The weather wouldn't clear up again that day so all of our vistas were obscured by thick clouds. We hiked in a fine mist until 3:30 pm when the bottom fell out and it rained until the next day. That made for slippery paths and poor foot holds. But we're boy scouts!

Joseph meets Les Stroud! One of our survivor idols! I had it set to video instead of picture. I think it worked out anyway.

"This is just nasty!"Rooster, Sam, and Joseph ate some ghost pepper hot sauce. It turned out to be really nasty! Rooster has been known to eat fire so this hot sauce was child's play. They acquired quite the audience awaiting their pain. Unfortunately, they were shocked to see that these kids from Louisiana could take such hot pepper sauce.
